SYLLABUS

 Objectives

The purpose of this course is to overview the history of graphic design and visual communication. Starting from the earliest ways of visual communication, languages and typography, the course aims to examine the timeline, events and designers till today. This is a course that will last for two semesters, so the first part of the course will cover the subjects from the Pre-historic times till the middle of the Modern Movements, the last subject will be the Bauhaus Movement. A detailed weekly course schedule will be given.

We will be having slideshows and projections about the subject material, including the images of the earlier ways of visual communication, works done by the graphic designers, and typefaces

 Requirements

It is important to know the past and the process of which the visual communication had been through for a graphic designer candidate, so that each student?s participation and attandance is required. Also each student is responsible from the reading material which can be found in the photocopy room, and should come to the class having read the texts mentioned. Homeworks should be given in on time, and no late homework will be accepted after deadline. All research homework will be hand in via e-mail to itorun@anadolu.edu.tr, except where mentioned. Lastly, taking notes in class session is strongly adviced.

Presentations sould take no longer than 20 minutes, and will be presented at the beginnig of the class session. Each group has to bring out at least 10 key concepts pointing out the highlights of the periods, which will be explained and examined. Presentation reports should turn in before the presentation. (deadline at 12.00 on the presentation day, latest) Late works will not be accepted and will be graded as "FF". See the instructers if you have any excuse for not being able to make the presentation on time at no later than a week before. More necessary details will be told during class sessions.

By the end of each course, the papers will be collected and will be handed out the following week.

 Materials

1. Reading materials, which can be found in the photocopy room
2. A notebook and anything to write with
3. English to Turkish - Turkish to English dictionary
4. An e-mail account (Preferably provided by Anadolu University)

 Reading Materials
We will use The History of Graphic Design by Philip Meggs mainly, and Graphic Style by Steven Heller and Seymour Chwast as a back up with regional styles, as text books. All readings from these books and additional readihgs will be ready at the Photocopy room each week. Please make sure you have read the texts mentioned before coming to class.
